1. Implementation of the Escuela Nueva-Escuela Activa model in private schools.

In alliance with the Genesis Foundation, this project began in 2006 at Colegio Nuestra Señora de Las Victorias in the Tunjuelito district of Bogotá.

It was originally targeted to grades 1 to 5 to accompany strategies for living and learning, and included the provision of tutorials of Escuela Nueva for all primary classrooms. This experience helped initiate a pilot project to introduce the Escuela Nueva-Escuela Activa model in secondary school. The direct coverage of the project is 210 students, 21 teachers, 2 directors and 300 families.

2. “Incubator Project - Escuela Activa Urbana ™

This initiative by World Vision Colombia seeks to reduce, prevent and eventually eliminate child labor and protect young people from the worst forms of labor through educational strategies aimed at children, girls, adolescents and young workers. The project takes place in the municipalities of Funza and Madrid (Cundinamarca) in accordance with the program to eliminate child labor promoted by the USDOL.

One of the educational strategies of the project is the School Incubator, which introduces Escuela Nueva to create a more relevant and effective secondary education for children, girls and youth in Funza and Madrid.

This novel strategy benefits approximately 10,000 students. It was formulated as a pilot for grades 7 and 9 in the areas of language and mathematics in 2007 and is now following the students into grades 8 and 10. The coverage of School Incubator approximately 500 students and 13 teachers of language and mathematics.

3. Design of a model of protection and education for children working in the streets.

In agreement with the Association of Christian Youth (YMCA - Cali) and Children of the Andes (COTA), the project seeks to design a model of educational care for children and youth working in the streets. Strategies include students and families in the learning process to prevent the involvement of youth in the most hazardous forms of child labor.

Progress includes

  • Training workshop with YMCA team of educators in Cali to introduce the Escuela Nueva Learning Circles™ program
  • Identification and systematization of processes of care and educational protection at YMCA – Cali
  • Evaluating the performance of boys and girls participation in the program in the areas of language, mathematics and self-esteem in school environment.
  • Participation in Cali for the conceptualization of the model.

The direct coverage of the project is 158 children and young people living or working in the streets. It is expanding every year to 53 new recipients with ongoing family visits.

4. Demonstration School in Tunja.

This pilot project is at the School General Santander Tunja (Boyacá), a private institution recognized for its academic excellence.

The school requested the Escuela Nueva Foundation’s help in improving quality and retention in its middle and high schools. The Foundation has provided technical assistance and provision of learning guides for elementary classrooms. The direct coverage of the project is 180 students and a team of 10 teachers and principals. Indirect coverage is 160 families who participate in the development of learning activities and institutional activities.

5. EN Urban School Program in Caldas

The Secretary of Education in Caldas and the Escuela Nueva Foundation have developed an innovative process to improve educational provision by strengthening teaching practices and developing core competencies in students and citizens. The program works with non-certified municipalities that have expressed interest in implementing the Escuela Nueva learning model.
 
This program is being launched in the following stages:

Phase I: Implementation of Escuela Nueva Urban Schools Program in two municipalities in the department of Caldas.

Phase II: Strengthening of educational institutions from Phase I and incorporating additional two institutions.

Coverage achieved:

  • Municipality of San Jose: 1 school, 15 teachers, 2 executives and 270 students and residents of the villages near the headwaters.
  • Municipality of Super: 3 schools, 10 coordinators, 90 teachers and about 4,000 students.

6. Escuela Nueva Urban Schools Program in Manizales

In alliance with the Mayor of Manizales and the Luker Foundation, the Escuela Nueva Foundation seeks to improve the quality of education in educational institutions in the city of Manizales through the implementation of active teaching methods.

In 2003, the Escuela Nueva Foundation began the process of training and leading tutorials in pilot primary schools. In 2005, a NATO intervention allowed for the expansion to other institutions. In 2008, the alliance has 12 educational institutions linked to the program in Manizales.

The Escuela Nueva Foundation provides classroom observations and gives feedback to each of the 440 high school, middle school, primary and preschool teacher in the 12 educational institutions in the project.
