In 2008, the Escuela Nueva Foundation launched major initiatives in Colombia, in the states of Antioquia, Putumayo, Valle del Cauca, Magdalena, Boyacá, Norte de Santander and Santander.
1. “Sowing Peace”
In alliance with the Coffee Growers Federation, we strengthened and supported the proper implementation of the Escuela Nueva-Escuela Activa Model in rural schools in Antioquia, Valle del Cauca and Magdalena. Nearly 5,100 children received Escuela Nueva learning guides updated to reflect the Ministry of Education’s newest standards and competencies. 120 new teachers were trained in the Escuela Nueva-Escuela Activa model. This initiative allows for equal access to educational materials and successful learning methodologies.
2. “Escuela Nueva and Water”
The Escuela Nueva Foundation and the Fund for Environmental Action and Children developed actions to consolidate school environmental projects in Santander. This program has raised awareness among children, teachers, and communities around caring for natural water sources. More than 500 children and 50 teachers from 7 schools are involved.
3. “Formemos – Demonstration school in Cundinamarca”
The Escuela Nueva Foundation has been giving technical assistance to a demonstration private school in Cundinamarca. Through this partnership with the Formemos Foundation, there has been a 20% increase in educational coverage in the region, and a significant increase in the involvement of fathers and mothers in developing educational activities.
4. Guides for Antioquia
Through an agreement with the Government of Antioquia, the Escuela Nueva Foundation provided new Escuela Nueva learning guides to all rural schools in the 120 municipalities of Antioquia. These guides, from ENF´s 2007 collection, have served 130,000 preschool to fifth grade students in 3,050 primary schools.
5. Ecopetrol - Putumayo
The Escuela Nueva Foundation, Ecopetrol (largest national petroleum company of Colombia) and the Government of Putumayo have been working together to improve education in the 5 counties of Putumayo in which Ecopetrol operates. Together, we have trained 400 teachers and provided learning guides to 530 schools. This effort has benefited 30 thousand students and 900 teachers.
